An assessment based on the African Media Barometer

The DW Akademie has launched the report of an assessment of Press freedom and Safety of Journalists in Ghana. The report is the result of a panel discussion that was conducted using 18 predetermined indicators from the African Media Barometer (AMB), the flagship project of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), Fesmedia Africa.

The assessment and panel discussion conducted by the DW Akademie in partnership with Fesmedia Africa included a panel of six experts comprising of media practitioners, a lawyer, and civil society representatives who deliberated on the state of Press Freedom and Freedom of Expression in Ghana.

The panel made practical recommendations and proposed steps to be taken to strengthen Press Freedom and Freedom of Expression which are unambiguously guaranteed by the constitution of Ghana and other legal and regulatory frameworks, as well as the safety of journalist.

The AMB is an in-depth and comprehensive description system for national media environments on the African continent. By the end of 2023, AMBs have been conducted 129 times in 32 African countries, in some of these countries already for the sixth time.
