The Right to Access Information is the Bedrock of Other Human Rights

Understanding this key principle is vital for democracies to thrive. In respect thereof, fesmedia Africa in partnership with Fraycollege, international experts from the Centre for Law and Democracy (CLD) and the Africa Freedom of Information Centre (AFIC) sponsored four online courses in 2021: two for Government and Public Officials and two for Civil Society and Journalists. This year we had participants from Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The courses will continue next year and dates will be announced during the first quarter of 2022.

Here is what some of our participants had to say about their experience: “It has been a productive course for me as a media student.” “Thanks for giving us this opportunity to add more knowledge on access to the right information. I am going to pass the knowledge gained to others.” “This course is educational and informative.”

The Government and Public Officials (supply-side) course aims to empower government and public officials to fulfill their mandate in providing and promoting information access in line with national and international commitments, thereby contributing to SDG Target 6: Develop effective, accountable and transparent institutions at all levels.

The Civil Society and Journalists (demand-side) course aims to empower civil society members and journalists to fulfil their important role of informing the public and contributing towards the achievement of SDG Targets: 5. substantially reduce corruption and bribery in all their forms.

The course materials include videos, reading materials, RTI resources, discussion forums, exercises and quizzes. The courses are engaging and informative, allowing participants to actively engage with the material and apply lessons learnt. They also contain three live webinars with the course moderators which are a valuable opportunity to ask questions, give input, and network with other course participants.

If your institution/organisation/government department would benefit from taking these courses as part of your work, please reach out to the Programme Manager at Fesmedia Africa, Dickson Kasote at dickson@fesmedia.org to see how we can facilitate the course offering in a way that will suit you.
